Application Process
Applicants for the Detention Division must successfully complete:
- An Online application
- After the online application has been submitted, an initial review of the applicant’s criminal history, driving history and TCOLE records will be conducted.
- If the applicant meets the eligibility requirements, they will be given a Personal History Statement and Job Description, to be completed and returned to the Records Office at the Lubbock County Detention Center, 3502 N. Holly, Lubbock, Texas 79403, within seven calendar days. If the Personal History Statement and Job Description have not been returned within seven calendar days, the application will be disqualified.
- Applicants for clerical positions will also be required to take a typing test and provide proof of their score within 7 calendar days;
- Once the applicant has returned all required documents, an investigator will be assigned to conduct a comprehensive background investigation;
- An interview will be scheduled and conducted for eligible applicants;
- If the applicant is recommended for selection, they will be scheduled for:
- a drug screening,
- a physical examination,
- a psychological examination (Peace Officer/Jailer Positions Only)
If you have applied to the Detention Division were not selected for a position, you cannot re-apply for one year.

Applicants for the Law Enforcement Division must successfully complete:
- An online application
- If you meet the qualifications for the position the Human Resource Department will email you the Personal History Statement.
- If you do not receive an email with the Personal History Statement attached; please check your application status online.
- If you received a Personal History Statement it must be completed and returned within seven calendar days to the Sheriff’s Office, 712 Broadway, Lubbock, Texas, or mail to PO Box 10536, Lubbock, TX 79408.
- Applicants for clerical positions will also be required to take a typing test and provide proof of their score within 7 calendar days;
- Once the applicant has returned the Personal History Statement and Job Description, an investigator will be assigned to conduct a comprehensive background investigation;
- A board interview will be scheduled and conducted for eligible applicants;
- A physical fitness test is required for most peace officer positions;
- 20 push ups within a minute
- 20 sit ups within a minute
- complete a 1 mile run within 12 minutes and 30 seconds
- A firearms test is required for most peace officer positions.
- If the applicant is recommended for selection, they will be scheduled for:
- a drug screening,
- a physical examination,
- a psychological examination (Peace Officer/Jailer/Telecommunicator Positions Only)

Eligibility Requirements
Detention Division Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be available for all shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays.*
- Must be available for mandatory recall.
- Has never been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order; is not currently charged with any criminal offense for which conviction would be a bar to licensure; has never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years; has never been convicted or placed on community supervision in any court of an offense involving family violence as defined under Chapter 71, Texas Family Code; and has never been convicted of an offense of Class A misdemeanor or any felony, which includes a sentence of deferred adjudication.
- Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License
- High school diploma or GED
- Have not been discharged from any military service under less than honorable conditions including specifically:
- Under other than honorable condition
- Bad conduct
- Dishonorable
- any other characterization of service indicating bad character
- Select positions (Entry Level Officer/Clerical) will also need to complete a typing test
*Some positions have set schedules that overrule this requirement.
Law Enforcement Division Requirements:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be available for all shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays.
- Must be available for mandatory recall.
