Under the Texas Occupations Code 1702.322, peace officers can work “off-duty” as private security without a separate license. Deputies can assist the community by providing security, crowd control, a uniformed law enforcement presence, or traffic control in an off-duty capacity for private functions, social events, store sales events, parades, job site safety, construction, funeral escorts, and other similar events.

 

Restrictions:

Deputies may not be hired for off-duty employment at businesses that derive more than 51% of their income from alcoholic beverage sales for on-site consumption, for any bonding company, or for any attorney or law firm in connection with their business operations.

 

All off-duty employment provided by Lubbock County Sheriff’s Deputies must be within the geographical boundaries of Lubbock County .

Rates:

  • The standard rate is $55.00 per hour per deputy. Requests must be made with a minimum four-day notice and not meet the criteria below for premium or urgent.
  • The premium rate is $65.00 per hour per deputy. This applies to requests made within four business days of the start date, or for any request occurring on the following holidays: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, President’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day (Thurs-Sun), Black Friday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
  • The urgent rate is $75.00 per hour per deputy. This applies to requests placed within 24 hours of the job start time.
